Stena Sracha - s/t (1994)

Here's what Aflalo had to say about this band: "Russian immigrants from the Ariel area. The band was active during the 90's but I think this album was recorded posthumously, in the early 00's. Great stuff, in my opinion. One of the members played bass for Dead Rabinz for like a week in 2001 or 2002."

And here are more exact details that were contributed by GoriVaduYobanaysSuka (and i edited a bit) -

Stena Sracha were:
Lembrik - Voice (1-4, 6-13); Bangk - Guitars, backing vox (1, 7, 9, 13), bass (7,12), voice (5)
Boom - Drums; Docent - Bass (1- 6, 8-11, 13)
Losharic - The Show Man, backing vox.

Also participated:
Misha (MODELO PARA ARMAR) - Guitar (12)
Punker - Backing vox (1, 7)
Verter - Backing vox (7).

All Music By Bangk except #7 by The Anymals, all wards by Lembric exept #5 by Bangk, #7 by fuck knows who. Recorded At Dry Ice Studio, Haifa, 1994

Stena Sracha was formed back in Spring / Summer of 1993 by Bangk and Lembrik, it was later joined by Boom on drums (also "Epydemia A", "Anus", and currently "Modelo Para Armar") and Docent on bass (also "Anus").

Here is the story of the band as told by Bangk:

"I was invited to "Epidemia A" Mishka-Hooishka's (Mikey the Prick) birthday party. The venue was chosen accordingly, it was a genuine SVALKA (dump) near Holon city. That was THE party (Boom gave Mishka a dead cat, 1mm thick, as a present, which he found on the near by highway).

I was so pissed off during the party that I actually asked Alex Mooh (also "Epydemia A") to puke on me, which he did after a few moments of hesitation (people told me that I was running after him afterwards with a huge chain, but I can't recall that.

A lot of things, that better be left untold, happened that night. Anyway, during that historic weekend Lembrik asked me to join forces with him and form a band, I agreed and he called it "Sracha" (shits) which I didn't like.

The early days

The second chapter in our history was the first session in Rehovot city. We were supposed to play there, but ... Imagine, small town, main street, 5 story residential building, on the second floor a room, which before the gig was some sort of Russian immigrants center or something similar ... well the gig was there!!! with "Epydemia A", and in between some hippy bands, that made punks even more angry, and words like "Fuck" and "Destroy" started to appear in our heads in all possible orders.

Sooner or later, this "Fucking Destroy" in residential building had to come to it's logical conclusion... well, truly "Fucking Destroy" !!! Everything inside was destroyed, including the TV set, which some naive people from the Ministry of Absorption, that allowed all this to happen, left inside... pogo... Obviously, we didn't play. We had two choices - to wait until the police will arrive, or to get the fuck out of there as soon as possible. But the most important event of that night happened much later. When we came to remains of an old building in a desolate area to spend the night. I can't recall in what context it was, but Boom said: "Stena Sracha" (The Shits Wall) which struck me straight away - that was the name !!!

The first proper gig we played in Rehovot (again ...), it was, what people call, "the second Rehovot session", was organized by the same people as was the first one, but this time it was outdoors, near the Serpentarium rehearsal garage. The funny thing (kindly speaking) is that in no other place you will find any mentioning of Stena Sracha playing there (!), so I will not write a word about those Sov-rock impotents there. The only other bands worth mentioning were "Epydemia A" and "Anus". Well, it was a very strange gig, 'coz Lembrik wasn't available, due to health problems, so I was singing, and for the first time Boom and Docent played with us (me this time). Only three songs were performed: State, Ghost and a song that was never played before nor after, with lyrics by Veronka Zaslavski (my best high school friend), it was called ... ah well, can't remember.

Haifa sessions

Boom and Docent were from the North (Haifa city and Tirat Carmel ), Lembrik lived in Holon city and I lived in Ariel, so we decided to rehearse in Haifa, in Dry Ice Studio. The three weekends in Haifa turned out to be an absolutely ecstatic experience. We not only rehearsed, but also recorded and, thanks to VJ Max (Kolia Blues), Israeli channel 2 team filmed a footage about Russian punk movement in this country, which basically was an interview with us, our friends (mostly Alex Mooh), and Stena Sracha playing State, Ghost and Act live in between.

Live In Jerusalem

Organised by Mooh, "10 years of Grazhdanskaya Oborona ("Public Defense" - the most influential Russian punk band from Siberia)". It took place in "The center for Soviet Jews" or something like that ... Due to alcohol abuse only two songs were performed. Our showman Losharic and, soon to become a Bible follower, Lembric got absolutely pissed and collapsed, Losharik on the drums and Lembrick on the audience respectively. After this kind of behavior the gig was closed by the sound man yelling: "Tak Vse Poshli Nahui !" which means "Everybody, Fuck Off !". The sound was fucked up anyway, so I was not pissed off at all. "

The Unnecessary Revolution - 1st of 3 e.p. (2005)

"The Unnecessary Revolution exists for no purpose in its different forms and with changing band members ever since 1991. loyal to the bizzare system that was forced upon them ever since they came up with their name, the unnecessary revolution never missed a chance to fail in their well tought, acquired skills. their music falls into the mello-dyslectic genre, a mutation of french chansons, psychedelia and avantgarde jazz music that was left in the sun to sour. "1st of 3" was recorded together with its two step brothers on 2002, while its editing and mixing went on until mid 2005." (from: http://birdsong.co.il/)

Lehakat Israel - Sheker Kahol Lavan (1996)

Experimental noise / proto-punk / hip-hop circa 1987-2001. Lehakat Israel has been reffered to as the backbone of the jerusalem underground music scene, and yet it still remains quite obscure to many, me included. This is their first CD release (as opposed to cassette) and it is also available for download through their own webpage (http://www.mryisrael.com/music.asp?currentpage=1), where you can find some other interesting things. An interview with them from '88 can be found here, but unfortunately for some of yous, it's in hebrew.

Sadraney HaDeshe - Rakoov (1997)

Post-punk / new-wave from Netanaya, circa '93-'98. They aren't really punk but not only are they awesome, but there was also a time that Kuku Bloff and Nekhei Naatza played with them regularly (until a fight broke out of course...). They had a reunion a couple of years ago but I was too jaded to go see them or to remember any details about it.

Soon In Here - Screaming for Justice EP

I must say it's a bit of a shame that I didn't upload this sooner. Not only were soon in here one of the best, and most exciting bands to have existed in the mid to late 00's, hailing from Kfar Saba, they were sort of a "sister band" to my band, nikmat olalim. We even toured europe at about the same time and got to play together in Graz, Austria, which was awesome. Well, it's better late than never, here is their EP.

Sartan HaShad - Al Tasimi Lev LaShtuyot (2000)

The first and only album of this epic jerusalem punk 77 band. They existed since '92, their first guitarist became a massive electro-trance DJ, and they were always somewhat secluded in the solitary jerusalem atmosphere. The album isn't half as good as their live shows, which i used to go to between '00-'03 more or less. Their demo cassette from the mid 90's was much more innovative and will be ripped and uploaded sometime in the future. Anyway, nowadays they call themselves HaHem (The Them) and they play clash-like rock-n-roll.

TOGETHER - Beneath The Underground (2006)

 From myspace.com :
"well i guess it all started not too long ago, around june 2005.
Appel ( Ex- Under Pressure) and Assaf (ex- Un Loaded - Soon In Here) had this wet dream for long years to form an israeli HxCx band that'll smash down venues every friday night.
Our drummer, Corey, who played in Not Kosher, Evil Weasel and Phony pony that time has joined in on the drumset and then Appel suggested that Nadav (or Myself) will Join in as 2nd guitar, around that time my other band Soon In Here has just broke up..
so i had an amount of spare time for some hardcore fun.
The four of us had our first rehearsal @ Shvil Hamifal and it was awsome. we wrote a few instrumental hxc songs, which were nice, since we didn't have a lead vocal yet.
3 Months later Shai ( Ex- Under Pressure) joined the group and our first song, titled "the last song", was written....
we kept on rehersing as we came up with the name "TOGETHER".
we played our first show at 18/11/05 @ the patifon, a small and cool venue that we like alot. the show was full and awsome, all our friends were showing they're supprt and the other bands were great as hell.
we kept on playing shows and writing new songs for awhile, along the way we met noam (www.rightway-records.com) who agreed to record us for free at his house. that means that Noam is achla gever.
for quite a long time we worked at the studio on these 7 songs and now its out to the open...
Our EP/CD entitled "Beneath The Underground" is out now...
so get it while you can!

Take Care, Stay True
TOGETHER H.C."

Poliana Frank - No Choosing / Ein Livhor (1990)

Anacrcho-feminist "folk-punk". This band has been active from 1987 till 2002. They never got the right attention from the israeli-punk scene, even though they have a real anarcho-punk attitude. Maybe it's because Against Me! weren't as popular back when they were around... or maybe it's because of their relative popularity amongst the 'normal' ashkenazi, upper-middle-class pseudo-left-wing crowd. This is their 2nd Album.

An (almost) all-female band that was active around '02-'04. The CD was released on Boshet Records and is still available through Urban Decay Records! Noon Mem - The Final Ada (1990)

The long anticipated re-issue of one of the first Israeli punk bands ever! A 5 part historical text (in hebrew) about the band was written by front man A.P. and can be read here. There are still a few copies of the CD (which also includes a DVD with a vintage documentary and a live show, a 40 page zine, archive footage and the original artwork) available at the Uganda. Here is an excerpt from their description of this release:
"Noon Mem, which formed in 1988 and split up in early 1991 following a handful of concerts and a single audio cassette release, was the first Israeli political punk band. Its short-lived history nevertheless sowed the seeds for the emergence of a real punk/hardcore movement a couple of years later. While an underground scene that encompassed punk, new-wave and industrial music existed in Israel since the early 80s, Noon Mem was the first band to apply influences of British anarcho-punk to the political realities of The Middle East. [...] in a time when separate genre-based scenes barely existed, those who were committed enough to actually be willing to play in a band found it relatively easy to relate to one another. The glue binding the members wasn't shared political ideals or even taste in music – but sheer individuality and desire to do things differently. [...]"

Los Caparos - Rasta Vasily (2007)

"Los Caparos are a genuine proof of successful mixing of different cultures, languages and musical styles. Starting their musical carrier in 2004 by playing in pubs and clubs, closely associated with the Russian community of Tel-Aviv, the band has quickly found a way into the hearts of the native Israeli audience as well. The combination of the Russian temperament and the Israeli sun has created a fresh, new and unique blend of Ska, Reggae, Dub, Jungle and World Music in Russian, Hebrew and English, and made the music of Los Caparos truly international. Los Kikes (HaYehudonim) - s/t CD (2006)

"The 'Los Kikes' experience can be described as a hallucinogenic symbiosis of fifties Rock n' Roll, Hard-Core Punk, sleazy Garage, profane Black Metal, heroic Stoner-Rock and primitive Surf with a Psychedelic Trance atmosphere in the background. The band made its first steps when Eliav "Batz" Betzalel (ex-frontman of USF, Mishkav Behema and The Astroglides) sharpened his drumsticks and gathered Yaniv Sharon (on guitar, ex-member of Freestyle), Roy Nadel (guitar, member of the Astroglides), Shuki "Shukmyster" Tzarfati (Bass) and Kiryo Postoyv (Vocals) around him in order to form the most malignant band in Israel. The band members managed to mix their own eclectic tastes into an exceptional sound that became their trademark. During the years the band played in varied places, from fancy clubs and over-crowded record stores to the miasmic underground tunnels of Tel-Aviv city. The band's live performances were always exuberant and hectic, and their frantic nature became almost legendary among the local scenesters. The Kikes started to record their first album during 2005, with the glorious Charlie Megira as their producer. Megira's Midas touch blended perfectly with the Kikes crude inclination and the result is Sshaking RecordsS' first release- a deviant journey into the saturnine and blasphemous roots of rock n' roll." Lebanon - Planet Rubble (2007)

"A band from Tel Aviv named Lebanon? Go figure. Well, whatever the band’s moniker, this group can certainly meld a lot of genres. The quartet gets the ball rolling with “Finland” (not a Monty Python cover) that fuses a spacey, psychedelic hue with some arty Yo La Tengo-meets-Explosions in the Sky arrangements. Lebanon also toss in some Metallica-ish metal during the, at times, breezy “Buried in the Avenue” that also has many Floydian touches. But the eerie, Barrett-like “The Dying Dying Man” seems to bring the album to another level. This format is revisited during the spooky and aptly titled “Poltergeist”. Other gems here are the winding, deliberate and somewhat dark “Megalith” and the equally pretty “Joan of Arc” with its slightly hard rock feel."

Latrine - Shit is Fertilizer (2008)

A really cool hardcore / industrial / grind solo project. This guy records everything on his own, then makes a playback cd and screams over it at his shows. I saw him perform twice and it was always super weird and cool. The whole cd is available through the myspace page (http://www.myspace.com/ifertilize) in FLAC and MP3 formats, but I forgot so I uploaded it to media fire as well.

Hello Bastards - Israel Tour CD (2009)

"We are from Brazil, Argentina, Poland, Israel and Germany who have been living in London for many years. This band was started to give voice to our views and beliefs, and to encourage punk music to become a political threat again.
Punk nowadays means nothing. It has been dilapidated and absorbed by the system, the threat that was the essence of punk music has evaporated. Most bands do not have a message and most bands have forgotten that punk music is political." (from: http://www.myspace.com/hellobastardsxxx)

HaMeshubatzim - Demo

A side project of the Punks of Nesher. Features members of couscous.
*Correction* - It's actually Brutal Assault, with David and Itai (also from couscous) switching between guitar and bass live. Itai recorded all of the instruments on the "demo". They even rehearsed once, or twice (!) but with a different line up. The hidden track on the Brutal Assault C.D. was originally a Meshubatzim song. (kudos to aflalo for the more exact details)

Agroyse Metzie - Kilahar Yad

Hardcore-punk from Kfar Saba from around '02-'05. Most of the band members were scouts (as in boy/girl scouts), in one of their line-ups they had a female drummer, which was kinda cool, their original drummer was Geller from Nikmat Olalim and later Bendor - who's a great drummer that played in a lot of the significant punk bands in Israel - joined them. A lot of people didn't really like them, maybe because they weren't real punks, but if you take the time to listen to them they're actually quite good, funny and interesting.

Tracks:
1. The Opposite is True
2. Doson Hiri
3. Because the Steering Wheel was Dropped
4. Ants
5. Municipal Imperialism
6. Good Arabs

Zer Prahim - Demo

A '77 punk band from the north from around '02. The band was never really connected to the punk scene but the songs are quite nice. Played once in the Krayot with CPN and some other bands but I don't think they lasted for much more than that.

Tracks:

Mistakel Al Azmi
Oman Tipesh

T.S.S. - Demo

TSS, or Toxic Shock Syndrome, was the first attempt at making a female-front anarcho-feminist hardcore-punk band. I was the bass player for a few rehearsals but I can't remember if I participated in recording the demo. I guess I did but it sounds a bit too good for me to accept I had a part in it. Anyway, the band dismantled before playing any shows or becoming really good, but was later reformed as Mitaan, with the same two singers and much more talented bass / guitar / drum players.

*Edit: So Noa says that not only was I the only Bass player in the band, I was the one who remembered all the riffs and we actually played two shows! Maybe I should reconsider going sXe....*

Fishyboom - One Fish Two Fish Drunk Fish Punk Fish

You might not realize this from their album, because the sound is half decent and even though they're a bit slow they have a few funny / cute songs, but this band really sucked when they used to play at punk shows 5 or so years ago. It's not so much their music as their style, they were just really annoying people. I looked them up on google and it seems they're actually still playing shows and shit but in the lamest, saddest, most pathetic way ever. Here's an excerpt i copied into google translate: "Fishibum come running to your party: If you are aged 18 + and you have enough alcohol for us, too, we'll give you appearance Birthday / Party Recruitment / bachelor party / party divorce will not forget. ..." So if you're a dumb ass soldier who wants to play punk for an evening, go give 'em a call..!

Fearful Soon To Follow - Product Testing

Sometime in 2001 or 2002 a few of the older punks who lived for awhile in europe and other places came back to Israel. This was very exciting in my teenager eyes since these were people who were members of legendary punk bands from the 90's - Nekhei Naatza, Dir Yassin, etc. Soon after their arrival they rented a run-down house in Jaffa and turned it into a practice space / recording studio / home. The first band to record there was Fearful Soon to Follow - anarcho-punk which sounded a bit like crass with an exceptionally amazing female singer. Probably the most under-rated release that came out of that house....

Drone Lebanon - Demo 2002

The man behind this mind throbbing noise project is/was an important yet somewhat hidden figure in the Israeli punk scene. His previous bands / projects include XUse ForceX (~'96), Moribund Fauna ('98), Kakal 15 ('99) and My Uniform Is Blacker ('00). USF, a legendry skate-punk / power-violence group, even wrote a song about him! In 2002 he officialy moved on from his hardcore/crust/sludge projects to more electronic and noisy stuff. It might not be suitable for the ears of your everyday punk but I think it's pretty awesome.
